Default Sun Microsystems is back in the game

The Story: Sun Microsystems has been in and out of the (metaphorical) grave more often than Count Dracula. The one-time king of the Internet servers suffered a body blow when the dot-com bubble burst, and since then it’s been a struggle to keep the company’s name on the buy lists of enterprise IT shoppers. That struggle has been chronicled by endless stories in the trade and financial press with headlines featuring bad puns like “The Sun is setting.”

As someone who has paid close attention to Sun Microsystems and its progress since Jonathan Schwartz took over the company, I am glad to see things are turning around for the company.

It wasn't long ago where people heard the name "Sun Microsystems" and thought "company that doesn't open up Java" - now, people are beginning to pay attention and see what kind of things the company can do in the future. I'm especially fond of the company's open source ideologies, and hope other companies can adopt a similar approach when they are good and ready to do so.

I think this is one of the main reasons Sun decided to hop on the virtualization bandwagon.

Sun to Acquire MySQL

Sun announced an agreement to acquire MySQL AB, an open source icon and developer of one of the world's fastest growing open source databases. This acquisition accelerates Sun's position in enterprise IT to now include the $15 billion database market and reaffirms Sun's position as the leading provider of platforms for the Web economy and its role as the largest commercial open source contributor.
