Default Storage robot at your service: a review of the Drobo

As the cost per megabyte of storage has dropped over the past decade, we've seen a corresponding rise in hard drive capacity at any given price point, but the meteoric growth of drive capacity has led to a corresponding problem with reliable backup or remote storage. Burnable media (CDs and DVDs) have failed to keep pace with hard drive capacity and are no longer a cost-effective option for high-capacity backup or storage. Use of another hard drive (typically via an external enclosure) is typically more cost-effective these days.

Drobo isn't the first external storage device designed for high-capacity storage—there are any number of external USB drives or enclosures offered by various companies—but Data Robotics' Drobo takes a unique approach to external storage. That approach comes with a correspondingly high price tag, but depending on your needs and desires, Drobo may definitely fit the bill.

Default

For $500 you can buy a complete file server which will offer RAID, software backups, and much much more functions than this "dumb" device, in my humble opinion.
