Default Make Mac OS X Lion Boot USB Install Disk

First things first: you'll need to copy a disk image buried in the Lion installer app somewhere outside of the Applications folder after you download it. The reason for this is that when the Lion installer is finished running, it deletes the 4GB app automatically.

Installing Lion adds a hidden recovery partition on your boot volume that you can boot from in emergencies to re-install Lion, so why would you need that bulky installer lying around? For one thing, your internal disk could become damaged, preventing you from using the emergency partition. Or you may need to install Lion on a machine without an active Internet connection, or simply want a separate backup, so be sure to save a copy of the install disk image before upgrading your machine.
