World's first 0.11-micron graphics processor, ATI's RADEON X300, in volume production

MARKHAM, Ontario, Jun 1, 2004 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Company extends track record of industry firsts with TSMC

ATI Technologies Inc. (ATYT) (ATY) announced today that its next generation of graphics processors, including the world's first chips developed using the revolutionary 0.11-micron production process, are in volume production at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). The RADEON X800 and RADEON X600 use TSMC's low-k 0.13-micron process, and the RADEON X300 is the first 0.11-micron part available from any chip supplier. All the chips will be available in PCs before the end of June.

ATI's long-standing relationship with TSMC yielded the world's first high-volume and high-yield low-k 0.13-micron graphics chip in 2003.

"We have a history of making smooth transitions to new production processes, from 0.15 to 0.13 micron, and now to 0.11 micron, and we have led the industry at every inflection point," said Rick Bergman, General Manager, Desktop Business Unit and Senior Vice President, Marketing, ATI Technologies. "Moving to TSMC's 0.11-micron process allows ATI to offer excellent performance at the right price points for the market."

"ATI and TSMC have collaborated to achieve a number of milestones, including the first high volume production of low-k 0.13-micron graphics parts," said Kenneth Kin, senior vice president of sales and marketing for TSMC. "Now, our two companies are extending this industrial leading collaboration to the 0.11-micron node. It's the kind of collaboration that reinforces our confidence in the strength and competitiveness of the semiconductor industry."

About TSMC's 0.11-micron Process

TSMC's 0.11-micron process technology is fundamentally a direct shrink of its industry-leading 0.13-micron process. The process will be available in both high performance and general-purpose versions. Though actual results are design-dependent, TSMC's 0.11-micron high performance process also includes transistor enhancements that improve speed and reduce power consumption relative to its 0.13-micron technology. It also delivers devices that are 15 to 20 percent smaller in size. When produced in TSMC 300mm Fabs, this combination results in a significant cost savings on a per-die basis.

TSMC began 0.11-micron high performance technology development in 2002 and qualified the process in December of 2003. Design rules, design guidelines, SPICE models, standard cells and memory compilers have been developed.
