Valve dismisses Windows 8

Valve, which recently started adapting its software so that it can run on Linux, has said it is doing so because it thinks that Windows 8 will be a disaster.

Gabe Newell, the co-founder and managing director of Valve, the videogame development and online distribution company, told the Casual Connect conference in Seattle that the biggest thing holding back Linux is games.

According to All things Digital, his outfit wants to make 2,500 games on Steam to run on Linux as well as Windows.

However he said that this is a hedging strategy because Newell thinks that Windows 8 is "a catastrophe for everyone in the PC space".

He predicts that there will be some of the top-tier PC/OEMs, who will exit the market. Others will see their margins destroyed.

Newell said that if that's true, then it will be good to have alternatives to hedge against that eventuality.

Newell spent 13 years at Microsoft working on Windows so he knows his stuff. He must have played with Windows 8 so he must have his reasons for believing it.

If the nightmare scenario is true, then maybe Linux will get onto the desktop after all.
