Default Summer 2008 Graphics Performance Roundup

The mid range is even more complicated, with the Radeon HD 4580, GeForce 9800 GTX and GeForce 9800 GTX+ all competing for your £110-£130 of cash. Firstly, comparing the new GeForce 9800 GTX+ to the 9800 GTX we once again find the newer, 55nm G92 has turned out a bit wheezy. Since the clocks are quite a bit higher, we expected the performance difference to be a bit more than just three or four FPS. In addition, the higher clocks negate any heat advantage of the die shrink and it runs neither cooler nor quieter.

To its credit, the Radeon HD 4850 was able to outperform even the GeForce GTX 260 in some tests (mostly when Anti Aliasing was turned on in typically ATI-favoured engines though) and for the large part often out-performed both the GeForce 9800 GTX and GTX+, except in lower resolutions or specifically when no Anti Aliasing was applied.
