Smartphone shipments fall
 

Sales of smartphones fell by 9.2 percent in the first quarter of this year and that trend is going to continue during this, second quarter, too.

Trendforce, a Taiwanese market research company said that there’s unsold stock in the channel, particularly in mainland China and while growth globally this quarter is expected to be 6.8 percent, that’s in sharp contrast to the 25 percent quarterly growth manufacturers saw in the last two years.

A side benefit of the decline is that DRAM used in mobile phones will stabilise, bucking trends caused by demand.

In turn, according to Trendforce, the Apple iPhone this year will use 2GB of LPDDR4 DRAM, and Samsung and LG are likely to up that by supplying 3G of memory for the Galaxy S6 and the LG G4.

Lenovo and Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi are expected to supply 4GB of memory for their models meaning that smartphones will have as much memory as notebook PCs.

Trendofrce estimates that LPDDR memory will appear in this quarter for the first time, and by the end of this year its share in mobile memory will grow fast.
