Default SK Hynix announces 8Gbit GDDR6 DRAM

Coming in early 2018

SK Hynix has announced its GDDR6 DRAM chips, advertising them as "the world's fastest" 2x nm 8Gb GDDR6 DRAM on the market.

According to SK Hynix, the new 20nm 8Gb memory chip will operate at 16Gbps per pin, which translates to a 768GB/s on a graphics card with 384-bit memory interface. This is a significant gain compared to current GDDR5X memory which offers memory bandwidth of just shy under 500GB/s, on a GTX 1080 Ti with 11Gbps chips and 352-bit memory interface.

JEDEC, an independent trade and standardization organization, has yet to release the GDDR6 specification, but hopefully, it will bring both lower voltage as well as a decent performance gain, compared to the GDDR5/GDDR5X memory.
