Default Samsung talks about 8 Gigabit LPDDR5 DRAM

All set for 5G

Samsung has announced its 8 Gigabit LPDDR5 DRAM prototype as it pulls out all the stops for 5G data connections.

Samsung said that its prototype 8 GB (not 8 Gbit) LPDDR5 DRAM package made up of eight such 8 Gbit (not GB) chips has been tested and it didn't catch fire. The announcement comes with the usual promises of “improved performance” and “reduced power consumption” which seem to be inserted into every press release these days.

The DRAM uses the latest LPDDR5 spec based on the DDR5 spec which hasn not been finalised. Compared to LPDDR4X or LPDDR4 Samsung promises that this gear will be the dogs.

It is theoretically capable of data rates of 6.4 Mb/s, against LPDDR4X’s 4.26 Mb/s. This is 14 HD porn videos of 3.7 GB in size beamed to your smartphone in a second.

Samsung’s LPDDR5 DRAM promises greater power savings thanks to a new “deep sleep mode”. Compared to LPDDR4X, the power consumption during idle mode is reportedly cut in half. There might be some consequences to that deep sleep but, all in all, the power savings Samsung promises amount to 30 percent.

The outfit did not say when LPDDR5 will be with us but it looks like Samsung has a foot in the door.
