Default Samsung gears up to 16nm DRAM

Heading to servers in 2020

Samsung is rumoured to be moving to a new 16nm process node in 2020 for DRAM chips

The firm relies on 18nm process technology to manufacture server DRAM chips at present.

According to Digitimes Research, the outfit has decided to improve its range by moving to more advanced process technology.

It has not had to do much innovation lately. It holds more than half of the global server DRAM market in terms of unit shipments.

The company has started volume producing 8Gb server DRAM chips using 18nm process technology in mid-2018 and will scale up substantially 16nm-made 16Gb chip output in 2020.

The outfit has a few issues over speculation that a batch of Samsung's 18nm server chips shipped to a US data centre vendor was returned due to unstable product quality.

Server and data centre applications are set to replace PCs and mobile devices as the largest target market of DRAM chipmakers by 2023, Digitimes Research believes.
