Default Samsung: DDR-2-DRAM Crossover Has Occurred

Samsung Electronics said Wednesday night that July production numbers now indicate that the company is shipping more DDR-2 memory than DDR-1 chips.
According to the company, DDR-2 shipments in July totaled 40 percent of the company's output in terms of total bits, while 30 percent of its shipments were DDR-1 chips, the first month that DDR-2 chips have outpaced all others.

"The industry has been waiting for a clear indication that DDR2 has become the dominant memory for EDP (electronic data processing) applications including computing and this is it. We are seeing an upsurge in interest in DDR2 from system OEMs as well as system integrators, something that will continue to accelerate into 2006," said Tom Quinn, Samsung's senior vice president of memory sales and marketing, in a statement.

According to market research by De Dios and Associates, DDR2 sales will increase from $1.5 billion in 2004 to $6.5 billion this year to $18 billion in 2006. Samsung's own DDR-2 production totals have increased from 10 million 256-Mbit equivalents in July 2004 to 360 million 256-Mbit equivalents throughout the first six months of 2005. Actualy July 2005 shipment numbers were not released.

Samsung is now producing 256-, 512-Mbit and 1-Gbit versions of DDR2 at 533 megabits per second, plus 256- and 512-Mb versions of its new DDR2-667 memory. An 800-Mbit version is on tap for early in 2006, Samsun said.
