OCZ Technology Overclocks DDR2 to 766MHz

OCZ Technology, a leading maker of high-performance memory modules for personal computers, said Friday it had managed to overclock its DDR2 SDRAM memory modules to 766MHz, a speed-bin that has never been achieved so far.

“OCZ Technology Group has made another leap in the new revolutionary DDR2 memory segment. Recently, OCZ has hit 766MHz at CL4 5-5-15 timings on an experimental DFI i915-based mainboard,” the company said in the statement.

The company used two 512MB OCZ DDR2 PC2-5400 memory modules with stock speed of 667MHz along with engineering sample of Intel Pentium 4 Extreme Edition 3.40GHz processor for the overclocking experiment. The memory maker did not reveal whether it had to increase memory voltage level to accelerate the speed.

In late-May, 2004, the company promised to deliver DDR2 memory modules certified to operate at 800MHz. Hitting 766MHz spot may mean that the company is on-track to offer higher-speed products by the end of the year.

The PC2-5400 products from OCZ operate at 667MHz with CL4 4-4-12 latencies, which is about typical settings for this kind of products. OCZ Technology’s DDR2 memory products at 667MHz clock-speed are available in 512MB and 1GB memory modules as well as in 1GB or 2GB dual-channel kits. While the modules are only certified to handle 1.8V voltage, the company’s EVP technology allows to increase the voltage up to 2.2V without losing the warranty.

DDR2 is now available in OCZ’s Platinum series with Enhanced Bandwidth, Performance series, and our Value series. The OCZ DDR2 product lines offer significantly lower latencies than the JEDEC standard timings, the company added.
