Nvidia Lowers GeForce 6800 Power Requirements

An Nvidia Corp. representative confirmed Wednesday that the company has lowered its estimated power requirements for its GeForce 6800 Ultra GPU to the point where only a single power connector is required.
When the chip launched last month, Nvidia said that cards using the chips would virtually require users to connect two Molex power connectors in addition to the power drawn by the cards.

"According to Nvidia, the card will run using a single power supply connector; however, this setup leaves almost no voltage headroom, and any variance in the power supply's output could cause system instability," ExtremeTech analyst Dave Salvator wrote in his review of the part. "For this reason, the GeForce 6800 Ultra has two 12-volt connectors."

On Wednesday, an Nvidia spokesman confirmed reports that the company had fine-tuned the chip's power requirements, and only one power connector will be needed by users who wish to run the chip in normal operation. However, overclocking the GPU will still require the use of the additional connector.

Instead of a 480-watt power supply, users can use a quality 350-watt power supply, Nvidia is now specifying.

In other Nvidia news, on Monday Nvidia announced the Nvidia Personal Cinema FX 5700, which will be offered by eVGA Inc. in both 128-MB and 256-MB versions. The cards combine a standard-definition TV tuner with a GeForce FX 5700 chip, Ulead DVD MovieFactory 2.5 and Ulead VideoStudio 7.1SE software. The card is bundled with the Nvidia ForceWare Multimedia application. Prices were not announced
