Nexus 7 doing well

Google's "Nexus 7" tablet is doing well as major retailers peddling the toy are running out of stock.

Reuters is reporting how GameStop has already run through its first two allocations of the tablet.

The $199 tablet, co-developed by Google and Taiwan's Asustek, has been getting good reviews.

Sam's Club, which is owned by Wal-Mart, listed the device as being out of stock more or less as soon as they went on sale. Office Depot's website continued to offer the device for sale.

Steve Jobs once said that the 7-inch tablet would be "dead on arrival" which is a little ironic because when one finally arrived he was dead.

Consumers have been able to pre-order the tablet from Google and several retailers in past weeks, and Google said it began shipping devices to consumers on Friday. It does not look like there will be another batch of tablets until August.

The Nexus 7 is a reference tablet which uses Google's Android mobile software. It is designed to show business partners how it thinks the tablet stuff should be done.

Google hopes that by putting out its own tablet, it will make sure its online services are popular.

It would appear that the tablet is being targeted at the Amazon Fire which is being sold for $199. The Google tablet has better graphics and a camera.

Smart money is on Amazon coming back with a new improved Fire which matches the Nexus.
