Default More HD 3870/ 3850 Review(s)

After looking over the graphs in the gaming benchmarks, it's clear to see that this card's results fluctuated quite a bit. The scores weren't too impressive in some of the games but it did great in others and definitely started redeeming itself in BioShock - which is a very recent game. It'll be interesting to see how this card performs once we start implementing new games into our benchmark lineup. There are new drivers being released on 11/15/07. I will download these drivers as soon as they are released and re-run all benchmarks and tests and see if the performance is impacted with the new drivers. If I get different results, I will update the review and the conclusion.

As for the fundamental blocks inside the GPU, the RV670 doesn’t differ very much from R600. The RV670 still has 320 stream processing units, 16 texture units, and 16 ROPs. The RV670 however, does away with the 1024-bit internal ring-bus memory controller in favor of a 512-bit variant. And its memory interface has also been pared down from 512-bits to 256-bit. From high-level perspective, these changes sound-like downgrades, but other tweaks to the GPU negate a massive loss of internal and external bandwidth.”

Today thanks to PowerColor we have the opportunity to test one of AMD’s newest GPU’s – The Radeon HD 3850. This version is not a stock HD 3850 card. The card we received from PowerColor is their Xtreme edition with 512MB of GDDR3. The Xtreme edition is a factory-overclocked card, equipped with a ZEROtherm VGA Cooler to offer better cooling performance. The reference Radeon HD 3850 card has 320 stream processors; the core is clocked at 670 MHz and has 256MB of GDDR3 memory clocked at 1.66 GHz. The PowerColor Radeon HD 3850 Xtreme’s core is clocked at 720 MHz and has 512MB GDDR3 memory clocked at 1.8 GHz."

AMD/ATI have been a bit quiet of late but thankfully the silence has broken. We're taking a look at their HD3850 and seeing what it can really do"

This is going to be a bit of a tough one for me because in the end, the HIS HD3870 presented us with a mixed bag of performance figures even though its price is nothing short of a revelation. In some games this card is really able to burn up the track while in others it lags behind other cards quite significantly; particularly in some of the DX10 benchmarks. When looking at the overall picture, I have to say that ATI should be proud of what they have done with the performance of this card.

The new PowerColor HD3850 Xtreme arrived Technic3D. The new Graphic Card with RV670 Chip from AMD better than the 2900 Cards? Technic3D will see that, with the Overclocked Xtreme, in the following Review.

http://www.technic3d.com/article-591...im-aufwind.htm

As you may know if you follow these things, AMD's Radeon HD 2900 XT graphics processor, also known as the R600, wasn't exactly a rousing success in all areas. The chip brought big gains in performance, features, and image quality, but it was late to market. When it arrived, it was fairly power-hungry and simply couldn't match up to the performance of Nvidia's top GeForce 8800 GPUs. Worse yet, the gaping hole between the $149 and $399 price points in the Radeon HD lineup left many enthusiasts wanting more.

Fortunately, graphics chips have relatively short lifespans, and the regular introductions of new chips bring ample opportunity for redemption. Today is one such opportunity, as AMD pulls the curtain back on its latest creation: a chip modeled on the R600 architecture that promises similar clock-for-clock performance, yet is under half the size and draws a fraction of the power. Better still, the new graphics cards based on this chip, the Radeon HD 3850 and 3870, look to be very affordable. That's progress on all the right fronts, and it sets up PC gamers beautifully at a time when we're seeing more good games released at once than, well, maybe ever.

Here's the question: is this progress sufficient to allow AMD to catch up with Nvidia's just-introduced and dauntingly formidable GeForce 8800 GT? Have the AMD guys engineered an even better stocking stuffer? Perhaps. Keep reading for some answers.

Instead of rushing our 3870 review for launch date today, we decided an indepth analysis of the 3850, crossfire and the 3870 would be more in line with Driver Heaven's high quality reviews, so we apologise for the brief delay, however that said we have something just as cool for our readers today!

Driver Heaven, Gaming Heaven, AMD and Valve have teamed together to give away a brand new 3870 graphics card, signed by Mr Gabe Newell !
