Mobility Radeon HD 5000 series brings DX11 to laptops

DirectX 11 graphics are coming soon to a notebook near you. In what must be some sort of record, AMD has gone from introducing the world's first DX11 desktop graphics card to rolling out netbook-bound derivatives in the span of about three and a half months. The new Mobility Radeon HD 5000 series includes three different graphics chips and a whole lineup of products serving the enthusiast, performance, and mainstream markets.

Firestrider: so mobility HD 5870 will be about the same performance as desktop HD 4850?
boo :(

Kinda stupid to brag with DX11 capabilities if the card won't be able to run games with all DX11 features enabled and at a reasonable framerate.
So basicaly, it's nothing better than every other mobile DX10 card

let's not exaggerate either :)
a HD 4850 is not slow by any means, compared to current crop of Mobile GPUs

games based on Valve Source engine, Unreal3 engine and others will run very nicely at higher resolutions, they'll look great and it will be the latest games.

but I guess the product name is a bit too positive

But those aren't DX11 engines ;)
I bet a fresh DX11 game will get that (mobile) card down on it knees.

you do realize DX11 doesn't do anything you can't do with DX9, right? The majority of games WILL still be DX9, because they will be multi platform games, and this means they have to work on XBOX 360 which has a muted version of DX9 running ;)

wutske 7th January 2010 15:06

I know, I know :) .
It'll be a great card for playing DX9/DX10 games, but the addition of DX11 support is just a waste of money (both for AMD as for the end user which will probably have to pay extra for this 'DX11' support)

It depends on the implementation, though, right? Take a game like Battleforge, for instance, which runs faster on the DX11 code path than with DX10/10.1.

It depends on what the developers want to go for. Greater visual fidelity at the cost of performance or DX9/10 level quality with better performance.

All mainstream multiplatform games will have a DX9 render path that will look pretty spiffy :)
sure DX11 features are sweet, but PC gaming market is tiny compared to console games

Has always been the case.... GTX 280M = ~8800 GTX desktop part.

Mobile HD 5780 will beat the GTX 280M easily, judging by the specs.
