The iPad 3's Retina Display puts PC displays to shame

While in some quarters the latest release from Apple might have solicited elucidated sighs of ‘more of the same’, the iPad 3’s Retina Display could have more profound repurcussions in the display industry.

According to display analysts at Meko, the screen on the new iPad, which many anticipated would be dubbed the iPad HD, is head and shoulders above what is available with PC and laptop displays.

While Tim Cook may be professing that the tablet will soon be selling more than the desktop, until then, the reality is that many of us will be staring into PC monitors both at work and at home for a long time to come.

This is despite the screens in our pockets offering far better quality. The technology is there but the industry is not making the most of it.

Only half of a percent of the PC and laptop monitors available in Europe are able to beat the Retina Display, with some highend 2560 x 1440 displays at 27 inches and 2560 x 1600 30 inch monitors. Compared to the usual 1920 x 1080 displays, the iPad is 50 percent better, Meko says.

Samsung does harp on about OLED displays in its handsets, and even in larger scale TV sets, but in the monitor space these do not get a look in.

According to Meko's principal analyst, Bob Raikes, the industry needs to do more to push high resolution monitors, creating better products for consumers, and in turn getting more cash into the display market.

Raikes believes that the way things are going the worst display someone owns will not be portable devices such as smartphones or tablets, but the “desktop monitor and the notebook I use all day every day.”

Unfortunately there has been little inclination from vendors towards improving this. Should the industry continue along this path then it risks missing out on a lucrative opportunity. That is, unless the release of the iPad 3 gives it the kickstart it needs to push ahead with better products.
