Default The Internet of tomorrow: 100Gbps to your house by 2030

Google's recent announcement of a 1Gbps fiber-to-the-home testbed has communities across the US salivating—but imagine what the Internet might be like if that connection to your home were even faster. Say... 100Gbps. In less than 20 years, such speeds will be possible, but only for companies who installed the right sort of fiber architecture.

The UK telecoms regulator Ofcom commissioned a lengthy report on the future of fiber (PDF) (or "fibre," in this case) from the firm Analysys Mason. In it, the company sketched out the future of fiber capacity with a pair of handy charts. Both are clear: between 2025 and 2030, shared fiber tech will be able to offer 10Gpbs to each user; individual fiber can offer a full 100Gbps. Whether ISPs will support it or not is a separate question.

2030 is 20 years away. I think it's a rather conservative projection if you look at where we were in 1990...

I actually started my internet experience at KUL in 1991, that was even before any households were on the net. It was the time of the 600 baud modems, giving you a whopping 1200 bit/s speed (increased year after year of course). 1200 bit/s is about 150 bytes/s, or about 0,15 kB/s (if my math isn't off). Compared to my ADSL line today (20Mbit or about 2560 kB/s) the speed increase is about 17.534. That's right : seventeen thousand times as fast.

I hope w'll do better in 2030

as with everything IT, there is stagnation, if you compare for example CPU speed increase of 1990->2000 vs 2000->2010 you'll see that the curve is flattening.

in mhz, performance on the other hand...

@ Thorgal, when you're close to tel.central it is the only way to achieve 20Mbit ADSL, for me however nearly nothing has changed for the last 7 years. Maybe we'll have super fast wireless connections by then

You should ask for a switch to VDSL, signal fall with increased ranch is much better (less) compared to ADSL2 and we actually achieve about 18.5 Mbit throughput at the office (with vdsl).
