Default Intel Unveils Line Of More Energy-Efficient Chips

Intel (INTC) said it also eliminated lead from its new microprocessors and expects to make them halogen-free by next year.

A key feature of the new Intel chips is the use of a hafnium, a silvery element commonly used to control rods in nuclear reactors, to reduce the amount of electrical power leakage, making the chips 30% more energy efficient.

Intel began developing 45 nanometer chips at its fab in Oregon. Two weeks ago, Intel opened a $3 billion semiconductor manufacturing facility based on this new technology in Chandler, Ariz. It plans to adopt the new technology at Intel fabs in New Mexico and Israel, the company said.

I know it is old news despite it came out minutes ago.

What it does not say is that 45nm chip will reduce cost as much as 30% .... now do we get 30% off on Penryn, or buy the stock instead.

Marking the next step in Intel's "tick-tock" product strategy and cadence to deliver a new process technology with an enhanced microarchitecture or entirely new microarchitecture every year, Intel Corporation will begin producing its next-generation Penryn family of processors in the second half of this year. These new processors benefit from enhancements to the Intel® Core™ microarchitecture and also Intel's industry-leading 45nm Hi-k process technology with its hafnium-based high-K + metal gate transistor design, which results in higher performance and more energy-efficient processors.
