Intel Denies Xeon MP “Tulsa” Shelved

Intel corrected the previous statements in regards cancellation of the Xeon MP processor with two cores published by X-bit labs and some other media. The chips are still on track, apparently.

“We did not confirm any Tulsa cancellation. In fact, we said, that we’re still on track to deliver a dual-core Xeon MP in 2006 as we originally planned. Also we said we are evaluating our options for Xeon DP and MP in regards to dual-core introductions,” an Intel representative told X-bit labs.

Earlier Intel denied rumours about abandon of the Xeon MP Potomac development.

Intel’s Potomac processor is the company’s first x86 chip for MP servers that will incorporate Extended Memory 64 Technology (EM64T) and some other advantages over currently available Xeon MP products. Potomac will have 1MB of L2 cache and 2MB or larger L3 cache. Tulsa processor will emerge in late 2005 and is likely to be a dual-core version of Potomac processor with some innovations. Both Tulsa and Potomac will feature revamped NetBurst architecture – the same as used in the current Intel Xeon MP products.

Late last week the world’s largest chipmaker said it had shelved the Tejas and Jayhawk processors in favour of certain dual-core offerings. Santa Clara, California-based Intel remained tight-lipped over code-names or architecture peculiarities of the microprocessors due to launch in 2005 that substitute the Tejas and Jayhawk on the market.
