Default Hynix to Ramp DDR2 Memory Modules Next Month

Hynix Semiconductor said Wednesday it would manufacture DDR2 memory for servers and workstations the following month. But by outlining the target market for the DDR2 products, Hynix might indicate that there is still headroom for DDR memory to evolve in desktops.

One of the world’s largest memory makers – Hynix Semiconductor – reportedly began to deliver its 2GB DDR2 registered DIMMs to major server manufacturers in April and, according to the company’s statement, will begin mass production in June to coincide with the release of various server and workstation DDR2 chipsets by Intel.

The newly introduced 2GB DDR2 registered DIMM is based on a 1Gb DDR2 components manufactured on the company’s 0.11 micron process technology and will support 400MHz and 533MHz speed-bins

Hynix demonstrated its DDR2 memory modules back in August 2003 and submitted its modules for Intel’s evaluation in September 2003. Given that around 8 months have passed since the submission, Hynix has most probably received approval for its DDR2 memory chips from the world’s No.1 maker of core-logic.

Earlier Hynix unveiled its DDR2 products for notebooks earlier this year.

It is not clear when the company plans to start production and marketing of DDR2 memory for desktops, by that is something the firm is pretty tight-lipped about. Earlier this year Hynix unveiled that it would mass-produce 550MHz DDR memory for higher-end desktops, the target market for DDR2
