Default Huawei's artificial intelligence is universal

The firm makes a lot more than just mobile phones

At yesterday's Mate20 jamboree, Fudzilla had a chance to interview a senior executive about the artificial intelligence built into its mobile devices and it transpired there's a lot more to its AI than meets the eye.

Dr Chenglu Wang (pictured) is the president of the firm's software engineering consumer division but also has responsibility for AI across the board. We were privileged to be invited to quiz him, after the Huawei event.

Last week, Huawei introduced AI into numerous of its server and enterprise platforms and he confirmed that the technology it used in that division is part of an overall development thrust for the entire corporation. China is widely acknowledged to be ahead of the curve on both the artificial intelligence and robotics front.

It also draws upon its software engineering skills - not just in China - but employs developers in countries more or less in every continent apart from Antarctica.

For example, Huawei has 200 software developers in Bangalore, India and 400 R&D developers across Europe with major centres in London, Paris and Warsaw.

Wang said its software engineer team was global.

He also said that it uses similar technology for datacentres as phones and the capabilities – we think he implied – can be applied across the board.

“Synergy is very, very easy for us”, he said.
