Default Graphic shipments fell in Q2 2018

Tulipmania over, perhaps

It won't come as a surprise to regular Fudzilla readers, but market research figures have confirmed mixed fortiunes for the big three GPU vendors in their second quarter sales.

According to Jon Peddie Research (JPR), the PC GPU market overall fell by 4.9 percent compared to the second quarter of 2017 but one vendor fared far worse, and that was AMD.

JPR said AMD's shipments fell by 12.3 percent and Nvidia by seven percent while Intel managed to increase sales by three percent.

By sector, desktop graphics fell by six percent and notebooks by five percent.

“The PC market… now seems to have shaken off the gold rush fever of crypto mining, and overall volume slipped, albeit with bright spots for the market here and there”, said JPR. “We can mark Q1 2018 as the peak and last hurrah of the crypto mining fever. Desktop GPUs, which went into mining rigs, have dropped back to their normal volume.”

The days when tablets “cannibalised” PC are at an end, and JPR thinks that always connected detachable PC tablets will eat up the old tablet market, apart from replacements for existing kit..

JPR said the figures don't count iPad and Android tablets, ARM based servers and X86 based servers.
