Default GPU Market Sees Big Changes

The big players in the graphics processor market, most notably Intel, Nvidia and AMD have shown some interesting market share figures for the first quarter of 2010 [1Q 2010]. In the case of the juggernaut, Intel, They saw a QoQ [Quarter over Quarter] decrease from 51.1% to 43.5%. This 7.6% QoQ and 5.5% annual [YoY] loss can be attributed to the appearance of nVidia Optimus Technology on the mobile segment and winning 80% of the Calpella design wins - and AMD selling large quantities of Radeon chips to Apple.

These figures are further detailed by JPR through the showing of Nvidia’s 33% market share which is both an increase QoQ and year over year. The increase QoQ was a mere 1.5% while the year over year figures showed a 6.5% increase - needless to say, quite an impressive growth. This can be attributable to their growth quarter over quarter in their discrete graphics, notebook, and desktop integrated segments. Although Nvidia has been struggling to get their new flagship product out, it appears that they’ve still been able to sell quite a lot of GPUs to edge out their competition. The only issue is, Nvidia needs to find a way to increase their profitability in their consumer GPU division because they cannot always rely on their professional graphics division to uphold their profits.
