I remember a GPU called the 6600GT that offered so much bang for the buck that no one was able to follow at such an aggressive price point. I remember it well because it was the first GPU that I ever bought that made me feel like somebody out there actually wanted me to play my games without having to spend a small fortune. It allowed me to play my favourite games at reasonable frame rates and at decent resolutions, but most importantly left me enough cash to buy more games. For most of today’s mainstream gamers, that sort gift hasn’t come from nVidia in quite some time, but this week everything changed as the GeForce GTX 460 was announced to the world.

"gift" is a big word; the GTX 460 at $200 comes with only 768Mb, which means gaming at 1920x1200 will be limited due to the memory size; the 1Gb version costs $20 more without similar performance boost;

the HD 5830 has dropped in price to $199 (newegg and others are following); which mixes it up nicely.

of course nothing of this matters much if you already have HD 5870 card or HD 5850; or the older GTX 280 or GTX 285, which, to be honest, runs most games fine at 1920x1200..

so not much of an upgrade going from GTX 285 to a $200 card.

to make the GTX 460 a real killer deal at $200 the performance has to go up 20%

GTX 260 beats the gtx 460 without too much trouble performance/price wise.

if you compare to ATI HD 4890 1Gb card which can be found for $150; that card has EXACTLY the same performance as GTX 460 768Mb at 1920x1200

how is a $200 card an upgrade from that?

The GTX 460 with 1Gb IS an upgrade from HD 4890, but costs too much in comparison, drop that price to $200 and we can start speaking about a new performance/price/mainstream king/gift
