Geforce 8600GT vs 7600GT

The 8600 GT is a joke in my opinion and does not deserve to be part of the x600 GT series. If anything, what we have see here today should have been performance delivered by the 8500 GT, not the 8600 GT. The results really spoke for themselves, as the GeForce 8600 GT was 12% slower in Far Cry, 17% slower in F.E.A.R, 7% slower in X3: Reunion and 19.5% slower in Company of Heroes. The only two games that the 8600 GT came out on top in was Prey (15.5%) and Supreme Commander (27.5%), making a two out of six effort very poor indeed.

When it comes down to a head to head with the 7600 GT, the 8600 GT proves to be superior, both cards are almost evenly priced in shops, there should be no doubt which one to go for, if given the choice. The dedicated shader engine on the new 8 series gives the card a boost in the latest games, leaving the 7600 GT behind. Only in older game engines both cards perform on par, but the 8600 GT has shown a benefit in the image quality department, being able to render 4xAF without performance impact.

I think reviewers finally stopped being nice to the companies since the 8600 series arrived.

Those are some rather low scores compared to what I got. The XFX 8600GT I tested had no issues soundly outperforming a 7600GT card.

sure it's a GT and not GTS?

Kougar 23rd April 2007 23:19

Well, I'll grant it is a XFX 8600GT XXX Edition, so 80mhz higher core and 200mhz effective higher mem clocks. I assumed the reviewer was using an AMD CPU as just about everything I can compare with my results appears to be higher than his results.

Going by his article, it appears the XXX overclock gives this card better core/mem clocks than the 7600, while his 8600GT was slower clocked on the core compared to the same 7600.

explains the difference:)

I'm pitting two 8600 GT against one 7600 GT (entry model from XFX, stock GPU clocks 650!) review out end of the week, if all goes well:)

Can hardly wait;)

I've changed the title of this thread:)
out of 7 benchmarks, 7600GT is on par/slightly ahead of 8600GT in 2 of them
in all the others the 8600GT offers a nice FPS boost over the 7600GT.

The benchmarks by Legionhardware are not wrong, they just didn't use enough games to get a valid "gameplay" sample; all the game engines they used are old (prey, fear, farcry, X3) except for COH and Supcom and in those last too their benchmarks show the 8600GT ahead in Supcom.

Games I used are: Oblivion, Colin MCRae Dirt, GRAW2, RainbowSix Vegas and Supcom. I've added FEAR/PREY now to check their findings.

The only game where the 7600GT is ahead, no matter what the settings, is FEAR. In all other games the 8600GT comes out on top; also found that with the 8600GT enabled anisotropic filtering (4x) has little to no performance impact; on the 7600GT it is noticeable.
