An investigation by CNBC has forced Facebook to terminate their relationship with another data analytics firm: CubeYou had encouraged users to complete "quizzes" in the name of non-profit academic research, but they, like Cambridge Analytica, were collecting information for ulterior purposes. In related media, SNL poked some fun at Zuckerberg with a segment that aired last night. CubeYou misleadingly labeled its quizzes "for non-profit academic research," then shared user information with marketers. The scenario is eerily similar to how Cambridge Analytica received unauthorized access to data from as many as 87 million Facebook user accounts to target political marketing.
