Dual-Core AMD Opteron Processor Named `Best of TechEd 2005'

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Jun 14, 2005 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- AMD (AMD) announced the Dual-Core AMD Opteron(TM) processor took "Best of TechEd 2005" honors conferred by Windows IT Pro and SQL Server Magazine at Microsoft TechEd 2005.

This is the second consecutive year AMD64 technology has been named "Best of TechEd" at Microsoft's largest conference for IT professionals and developers. In 2004 the AMD64 platform was named Overall "Best of TechEd 2004" for innovating an industry-standard 64-bit architecture.

In naming the Dual-Core AMD Opteron processor as the "Best of TechEd 2005," Windows IT Pro and SQL Server Magazine recognize the evolution of the AMD64 platform and the multi-core technology enabled by this innovative architecture.

The Dual-Core AMD Opteron processor also snagged top honors in a new award category at this year's Microsoft Tech Ed, "Attendee's Pick." More than 11,000 attendees at the 2005 conference evaluated and reviewed the "Best of TechEd" finalists, selecting AMD new multi-core processor for servers as their favorite.

The AMD Opteron processor, based on AMD64 technology with Direct Connect Architecture, was the industry's first x86 multi-core processor for servers and workstations that is both 32- and 64-bit capable. Dual-Core AMD Opteron processors deliver higher performance within the same power envelope as single-core processors because they were designed from the ground up for multi-core computing, amplifying the elegance and power of AMD's current single-core solutions. With the availability of Windows(R) Server 2003 x64 editions and Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, customers now have a mainstream, industry-standard 64-bit operating system optimized to take advantage of the power of AMD64 dual-core technology.

"TechEd is the world's largest assembly of the industry's leading IT professionals and influencers. What an incredible testament to be judged as best by these respected opinion leaders," said Marty Seyer, corporate vice president and general manager, Microprocessor Solutions Sector, AMD. "These awards continue to validate our non-disruptive approach to dual-core technology, with an architecture designed to fit in today's existing infrastructure while providing leading-edge performance."

"With the recent release of the Dual-Core AMD Opteron processor and the AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual-core processor, AMD has firmly established itself as the leader in CPU technology," said Mike Otey, senior technical editor for Windows IT Pro and SQL Server Magazine. "AMD's new dual-core chips are currently shipping and provide immediate performance boosts for server and desktop applications with no increases in power consumption or changes in the systems hardware. This technology sets the stage for the next generation of computing."
