DRAM prices continue to drop

MEMORY WATCH site DRAM Exchange said prices of contract memory in December will continue to drop with a 512Mbit DDR2 chip costing a piffling 80 cents. Downward pressure will take those prices even lower, predicted the site, as a result of poor demand. A 1GB DDR2 667 module currently costs $20 and that is likely to fall too, as nothing in the spot or the OEM market looks like spurring extra sales.

Early indication of Black Friday sales did not look good comparing to last year, especially in electronics/computer items. Consumer spending won't be high for this year from what I've heard. So, DRAM price will go down even more.

Can already buy 2x1GB DDR2-800 RAM kits for <$20. Or a single 2GB DDR2-667 SODIMM for $30.

Now if DDR3 would just drop like DDR2 has done...

Those are memory chip pricings you are referring to?

Since nobody makes money on memory this year; I don't think DDR3 price will drop to DDR2 level. I do believe CPU, Memory and Board pricing will remain high on Intel side. Bargain DDR2, CPU and board on AMD side. Highend Intel system will only be for those who have and C2D DDR2 will be for those who have not.

Referring to actual products you can buy... a-la used to be $20+5 shipping 2GB 6400 kit for the last week: Link Still going on, single 2GB SODIMM DDR2-667 module for $30 shipped: Link at least three days old deal now.

Intel boards have always had a premium thanks to the chipsets, won't be anything new there. AMD's always had plenty of very cheap/affordable options, even when their processors were king. I am more concerned about Nehalem. Since the memory controller is on the processor, Nehalem will decide what memory it wants to work with, not board manufacturers.

Rebates at this time of the year are not a good indicator of current pricing.

Fry's was selling Q6600 + ECS board for $198 on Black Friday.

For over the past month, before the holidays, RAM prices have been around $30 AMIR for 2GB 6400 kits. Its not a holiday thing
