Default Crown Prosecution Service bought nearly 5,000 HP tablets

An MP has asked the UK Attorney General about a Crown Prosecution Service decision to buy 4,700 HP tablets from Logica.

Tory minister Oliver Heald, the Solicitor General, told Emily Thornberry, the Labour MP for Islington South and Finsbury, that the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) decided to buy tablet style devices for use by lawyers in June 2011.

Heald claimed the purchase was as part of the Transforming Through Technology programme.

Interestingly, the CPS procurement people decided that standard laptops “were assessed as not fit for purpose for in-court presentation of digital cases”.

The CPS made the decision to buy 4,700 HP Elitebook 2760p devices from Logica in December 2011, though Heald did not say why.

Recommended retail prices for these machines start at £1,223, although we’re sure that Logica sold them for rather less than that. TechEye has approached CGL, which has acquired Logica, for comment.
