Default Bing way worse than Google at detecting malicious sites

Microsoft’s Bing search engine is five times more likely to serve up malicious sites in search results than Google, according to German research outfit AV Test.

Mind you, Google isn’t perfect when it comes to malware detection, but at least it’s better than the competition. In an 18-month survey, covering 10 million search results served up by Bing and Google, researchers found that Google served up 272 potentially dangerous sites. Bing managed to serve up 1,285.

However, even Bing looks great compared to Russian search engine Yandex, which delivered 3,330 malicious sites, according to Venture Beat. It is hardly surprising, since nowadays it’s easier to find malware than vodka in Russia. Yandex disputed the results of the survey, saying that it merely notifies users of possible consequences and does not block access to the webpage completely, which sounds fair enough.

Microsoft does not appear to have an excuse for Bing’s promiscuous behavior, but then again nobody uses it so it doesn’t really matter.
