Auto geek hits highway for surreptitious runs in jet-powered VW

The Navy surplus General Electric T58-8F is that menacing, giant cigar-like item sticking out of the VW's hatchback. When he fires it up, standing next to it is a bit like standing next to one of the engines of a Boeing 737 or an Airbus A320 while the thing is about to back off from the gate. This, however, is a Volkswagen bug with a 1,450-horsepower jet engine sticking out the back, idling away at 13,000 RPM.

kinda stupid...

the fastest (legal, factory made) car i've seen had a second ignition key that needed to be turned to go to 'top' speed and even then it was limited, because the tires would desintegrate and catch fire if going even faster.

even if the tires hold, a jet engine on a VW beetle = suicide...

i've seen professional race cars lift off the ground & go flying due to disrupted aerodynamics (Spa Francorchamps), i dont even want to think what happens to a Beetle.

Darwin award when the guy dies...

it's not about the speed, tops out at 140MPH (he doens't dare go higher) it's all about the sound for him

might as well just bought some boomboxes and hook it up to a nifty PC rev sound generator

I'm not sure, but I don't think he could by using the jet. Wheelies happen because there is a lot of power on the rear wheel(axe). The jet only pushes the car forward.
I sure hope for him that his brakes won't break when he's starting that engine
