uhm; how do you recon that a entry level card is not up to snuff? you're comparing entry level with high end here, ATI has been twice as fast for quite some time now, granted that the 8800 GTX survived quite long (9800 GTX+ is still going strong and directly based on that design) but when a entry level card is able to match performance of that one, something's up

what I'm trying to say: ATI HD 4770 offers more value for its money than previous generation entry/mid-range products;

7600GT to 6800 Ultra.
7600 GT is nowhere near twice as fast as 6800 Ultra, 20-30% faster at best;

what we have here IS a case where a 7600 GS would be three times as fast as 6800 Ultra

I fully agree, it does.

But the 8800GTS launched in November 2006. Exactly 2 & 1/2 years ago. I'd expect a midrange card like the HD 4770 to beat it today.

It only seems odd because NVIDIA hasn't kept pushing innovative new GPU designs, even the GTX 285 is just a fattened 8800GTX core with lots of tweaks.

The first "new" NVIDIA core since the 8800GTX should make a similar leap in performance that 8800 series did at the time.
