ASUS MATRIX 5870 PLATINUM First Look & Benchmark

The AMD "Cypress" desktop Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) has been available on the market (as the ATI Radeon HD 5870 graphics accelerator) for over two quarters now. Since its release, the RV870 XT GPU part used in the ATI Radeon HD 5870 has appeared on a number of graphics accelerator designs other than ATI's own "reference" Radeon HD 5870. Notable examples include Gigabyte's GV-R587SO-1GD and the MSI R5870 Lightning, both being re-engineered iterations of the ATI Radeon HD 5870, complete with alternate power and thermal layouts. With the exception of GPU and gDDR clockspeeds, specifications of these "non-reference" products have stayed pretty much the same as AMD's own "reference" ATI Radeon HD 5870.

It is hence of no surprise, that Asus had in-the-works, a different ATI Radeon HD 5870 design. More so, given that its competitors have clearly come up with some rather clever and successful variants of the ATI Radeon HD 5870 for a few months already. Surely, Asus's brainchild had to be somewhat different; what better way to do it than to double the size of the gDDR memory onboard?
