Default AMD Updates Fourth Quarter Outlook

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Jan 10, 2005 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- AMD (AMD) today announced sales for the fourth quarter ended December 26, 2004 are expected to be up slightly from the $1.239 billion reported in the third quarter. Fourth quarter operating income is anticipated to be positive, but down significantly from third quarter operating income of $68.4 million. The Computation Products Group (CPG) continued its upward trajectory and fourth quarter sales are expected to increase compared to the prior quarter. CPG is expected to be profitable. In a competitive and challenging NOR Flash memory market, the Memory Group is anticipated to have lower fourth quarter sales and an operating loss.

The company's prior guidance for the fourth quarter anticipated overall sales to increase, driven by processor sales that exceeded seasonal trends, and Flash memory sales that were flat to up.

From poor flash memory sales AMD dropped better than 20% this morning trading.

AMD shares (AMD) gave up $4.03 to $16.11 after delivering the warning late Monday. AMD, which is Intel Corp.'s (INTC) smaller rival in the market for personal computer chips, said sales for the quarter ended Dec. 26 would gain "slightly" from the $1.24 billion it posted in the previous quarter.

However, AMD was expected to post sales of $1.35 billion, on average, based on a survey of analysts by Thomson First Call. The warning led analysts to begin cutting their estimates and ratings shortly after the market opened Tuesday.
