AMD is Readying Athlon 64 2800+, Athlon 64 FX-53

Advanced Micro Devices has added a number of new microprocessors based on the new stepping of AMD Athlon 64 chips into its documentation available to general public and describing thermal and other specifications of its products. Among other central processing units there are yet unannounced AMD Athlon 64 2800+ and AMD Athlon 64 FX-53 SKUs.

The new CG revision of AMD64 microprocessors resolves some issues with current 64-bit chips, e.g. enhances 2T DRAM timings to enable desktop customers to achieve higher density and/or higher speed memory and removes requirement for use of identical DIMMs for the 2nd and the 3rd DIMMs in 3-DIMM mainboards.

Virtually all AMD64 desktop processors at 130nm process technology are expected to be transitioned to the new CG revision eventually. To distinguish between the C0 and CG stepping, customers should pay attention to markings of the chips, where the last two letter stand for core revision (e.g., ADA FX51 CEP5AT, ADA 3200 AEP5AR, ADA 3200 AEP5AX). For the Athlon 64 processors AR and AX letters reflect improved CG core, in order to get revamped Athlon 64 FX “CG” chips, customers should look for AT letters.

Rather surprisingly, AMD added the Athlon 64 2800+ processor for desktops into its documentation. The chips run at 1.80GHz, incorporate 512KB of L2 cache and feature single-channel memory controller. Its thermal and other specifications are the same as those of other PGA754 chips from AMD. Pricing of the CPU has not been announced so far. Mobile AMD Athlon 64 2800+ is quoted at $193. Typically, desktop chips cost lower than notebook processors.

As expected, the Athlon 64 FX-53 is clocked at 2.40GHz, packs 1MB L2 cache and is equipped with dual-channel DDR SDRAM controller. Pricing of the part is to be announced upon availability later this month.

Additionally, AMD added a yet another Athlon 64 3200+ SKU for Socket 754 into the product line. The part is clocked at 2.20GHz and is equipped with 512KB of level two cache. The original AMD Athlon 64 3200+ works at 2.0GHz and packs 1MB L2 secondary level cache.

Officials from AMD did not comment on the publication.
