AMD Radeon HD 5870 X2 TDP Hits 376W

We've heard that ATI is working on an X2 version of Radeon HD 5870 card but the biggest obstacle is the power and how to cool such a card. We’ve learned that the current TDP for X2 is 376W and that the company is working on this issue, as apparently they will have to slow down the GPUs down by quite a lot to get rid of the heat. Even if they use downclocked Radeon 5850 cores that run at 725MHz, the power goes down by only 36W (2x170W) to 340W. The hottest card from ATI so far was HD 4870 X2 that had TDP of 286W.

But it's from a well known website that loses credibility time after time... saw that too late, so taking it with some grains of salt, if not the whole package

A truckload would be more appropriate

suspicious, it was.

Well it's obvious. All Faud did was take the max consumption figure of the HD 5870 and double it, from: http://www.madshrimps.be/vbulletin/f...summary-66340/

So really this is a worst case scenario, I don't see the HD 5870 X2 being much off of a GTX 295. If they have to they will downclock the cores to two 5850's.

Better call it Radeon HD 5850 X2 then :)

Hm, they already did that with the 4850 X2. :) The GTX 295 is just a pair of (old version) GTX 260's anyway...
