AMD, Intel way behind IBM on power tower front

Since I have a co-worker who designed VRMs.. he has told me that the lower the voltage the more Coulombs of charge is nessary to overcome the circuit resistance. VRMs sourcing oover 150 amps need a bigger pipe with more electrons to overcome the resistance. It's like trying to force a lot of water through really small holes.

Unless you have the force to overcome the resistance of the pipe you can't get enough water/electricity into the system. So this means that a 12 or 24Vdc feed must be used to add the pressure.

AMD won't be a leader and do a 24Vdc VRM because they have always followed Intel's lead. Intel won't do it because it would now mean that dangerous voltages / currents could now harm the average joe.. So here we have the chicken and the chicken both looking at each other wondering if either one will cross the road.

IBM is going to really kick their butts becuase they will be the first to implement the optical interface into silicon. Intel and AMD are scrambling. It's fun to watch the chip companies eke out processors on the hairy edge of working and not working.

It's a tradition fighting technology and the idiots have already won... This is a good lesson. Never let a bean counter tell a chip architect how to design chips.... (grins)
