Default AMD HD3850 and HD3870 will finally be quiet

THE RADEON HD 3850 will come to market with a single-slot cooling setup, outputting only 31 dBA. This is closer to silence than 8600GTS or 8800GT, boards with which this card will undoubtedly be compared. A Radeon HD 3870 will follow with a dual-slot cooling setup, heatpipes and everything. This setup will output 34 dBA, more than 3850, but drastically less than 2900XT or a direct competitor, GeForce 8800GT.

no way of knowing how they (AMD) obtained their 34dBA reading, no way of knowing how TheInq recorded their 8800 GT 43dBA reading. Thus... the two are completely and utterly not comparable

Considering the type of fan used on most 8800GT cards (looks identical to the old 7800GT fan), and knowing just how loud the 7800GT fan got... I'd say AMD has a good chance to make a quieter card?

yes, especially considering the beefy cooler on the 3850 has to cool a GPU that consumes only 105W

Still, I wonder why they don't just let Arctic Cooling design the cooling solution for 200$ + cards. They would get a brandname that stays for silence and the cards would be silent as well.
