The first run under 20s still is miles a way from the actual world record, but shows what 45nm AMD are capable of.

Not really. Yours shows initial results, mine show a WORLD RECORD :D

is it clock for clock better than Phenom/Conroe ?

With a Performance Product of 70k, it's much faster than a Phenom, which normally does about 73-74k.

the real question of course, will stand a chance against Intel Penryn and upcoming Bloomfield

Against Penryn the Phenom already stands a chance. In terms of overclocking: the 45nm will be able to hit 4G on air cooling, as the word on the street goes.

Bloomfield should be a good competitor for the Deneb processor.

that's good news, if they keep pricing competitive it will be interesting :)

The pricing will be very competitive. AMD has already told that their are not going to make the best of the best anymore, but will be focussing on price/performance cards. Price range 150~250 for videocards, for instance :)
