Ageia Goes Green: The Future of Ageia PhysX Discussed

In a rather unexpected move, Nvidia Corp. took control over Ageia Technologies, the world’s only developer of physics processing units for video games. We decided to find out some more information about the future of physics processing and asked a vice president of Ageia several questions. Will there be Nvidia-branded PhysX accelerators? Is Nvidia developing an open GPU physics platform? Let’s find out!

A bit weird since NVIDIA was working on Physics themselves if I remember that right, to many variables to determin if this is actually a step forward for NVIDIA themselves. With more money around, it could be actually happening that we get few popular games which require physics cards to be playable at full galore.

Not weird in the least... Nvidia may have realized turning their GPU's into PPU's was a bit more complicated than they had thought? Concentrating on their core GPU business and letting AGEIA concentrate on how to make Nvidia GPU's work like a PPU is probably the best scenario.

Not sure how MS's DX Physics is going to play out with Nvidia/AGEIA though... I also have to wonder if Nvidia saw AGEIA as added defense against future Intel competition...

I think if they manage to turna low-end GPU into a physicics card, the cost base would be a whole lot better than it is.
