40GB for $55 per month: Time Warner bandwidth caps arrive

Time Warner Cable will launch a trial program on Thursday which will impose monthly Internet consumption caps on new subscribers in Beaumont, Texas. Following a two-month grace period, cable users will pay $1 for each additional gigabyte consumed beyond the cap.

Time Warner Cable's plan to test metered service was originally revealed to the public when an internal company memo was leaked in January and later confirmed by the company. The memo indicated that the results of the trial would be used to determine whether to roll out the bandwidth-capping plan to other regions.

And here I was thinking that we were the only industrialized country in the world with stoneage-like traffic caps.

The moment TWC imposes a bandwidth cap on me I am switching. I'm sorry but this is the era of online entertainment. I download GBs of software, patches, updates. I download legit movies and music. I game quite heavily, and I always listen to internet radio. Internet radio alone is a hundred MB per day+, I can see that much from viewing my firewall logs.

Users that subscribe to digital download services are going to be in a world of hurt.

Also, TWC refused to comment on how I can find out my actual bandwidth usage. Doesn't seem to be a way for me to find out... anyone know any good bandwidth monitors they use?

DU-Meter does a good job if you have one central point where everything passes through
