12 Software RAM Disk Solutions Compared

Loyal reader Charles pointed out this interesting comparison of different software RAM disk solutions, thanks Charles!

As a standard, I will create 500MB on every RAMDisk software if it allows me to. Then I will use the default CrystalDiskMark benchmark settings to test on the RAMdisk space. I’ve tried running the test a few times and the result I get is always different but they are very close. The number that matters the most is the 4K test

source of the charts is from: http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/...d-write-speed/ where you can also find links to all the software used.

The DATARam RAMDisk Freeware might be most popular seeing the results are a cut above the rest : http://memory.dataram.com/products-a...ftware/ramdisk

Was using Gavotte Ramdisk, but switched to DATARam RAMDisk now, let's see if the performance difference is noticeable :)

What do you use your ramdisk for ?
I can't realy see the use of ramdisk as they are either too small or either use too much of your ram (resulting in a lot of swapping between ram and hdd)

- Firefox/IE Temp Folder
- Windows Temp Folder
- Outlook Secure Attachment Temp Folder

Those alone boost web browsing experience tenfold, launching installations, and opening attachments in Outlook; night & day difference

Are they all compatible wit win 7 ?

some are, some aren't; the one I just installed (DATARam) is: Dataram RAMDisk - Windows 7, Windows Vista, XP, Server

I've been using Dataram for a couple of years.

- The entire Firefox (including profile) ---> MASSIVE difference
- IE8 temp
- MPC-HC
- Winamp
- Avidemux2 (portable)
- in general any portable software I want to try

I must say, after seeing the Random Write numbers, I will be trying the Gilisoft RAMdisk.

I have tried the SuperSpeed one but it crashes too often.

How do you put the entire firefox in the dataram? the profile is easy, just change the profile.ini, but can i do something more ?

Also, didn't understand which directory do you change for the outlook.
Thanks

Well, during installation I specify the RAM-disk as the destination for Firefox.

I make sure I set the RAMdisk's options to save the RAMdisk to the hard drive on exit and to load it on startup.
It adds on your exit and start-up times but you get an instantly on Firefox and significantly less wear on your SSD (which given my use of Firefox, it is substantial :))
I then use the profile manager to create a new Firefox profile in the RAM, delete the old, and finally rename the new 'default'.

What do you mean by the profile.ini ?
