Xeon E3110 3.0 Ghz (Wolfdale) vs E8400 duo core

Please forgive my low tech level and how basic this question is but I keep googling and searching and keep coming up with different answers so i thought I would go to the pros.

I have a GA-EP35-DS3R (rev. 2.1) mobo coming in the mail and want to put in a decent processor like an Intel E8400 duo core OR a Xeon E3110 3.0 Ghz (Wolfdale)

Some people tell me that the XEON is a server processor, and I shouldn't try and use it on a "desktop" motherboard, and other forum posts say that it is EXACTLY the same except there is a possibility it might OC better.

I am a gamer but not a rabid one, I run a GeForce 8600 GT 256 MB on a 17" 5MS LCD and 4 GB of RAM in a AMD athalon 4400+ 2.3 GHZ at the current time.

I am interested in OC eventually, but have to learn a lot more before I can even ask an intelligent question.

I just want to know if it will do me any harm, or is it a bad decision, to go with the XEON condidering the current scarcity of the E8400.

Thank you for your time.:D

Won't the Xeon be more expensive?

Won't do any harm. As JMke said, would ordinarily be more expensive.

It will be most likely better quality chip... but consumer motherboards are not optimized for overclocking Xeons because those are server parts, so the final result is it may not overclock as well as an E8400 even though it may be a better quality chip. Personally I'd suggest sticking with the E8400, but that's me.

The only server CPU ever to be interesting to end users were AMD Opteron S939, because of high OC and lower price than some desktop models. But Xeon Intel are over the whole line more expensive then their desktop counterpart. only exception being the that Skulltrail CPU which is more expensive than the Xeon CPU :/

this might be on-topic:) http://www.madshrimps.be/vbulletin/f...rt-e3110-42771

Plenty of server CPUs have become interesting to enthusiasts, or at leat those overclockers. The Xeon counterpart to the Q6600 was popular for a time...

I said the Xeon would ordinarily be more expensive... I had checked before posting, those few places where you can find them currently the E8400 and E3110 can be had for the same price. :)

Interesting article JMke! I don't know how well E8400's scale to compare?
