Default What is your WinSAT score? :D

- Download Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...1-2497c146af15
- open a command prompt, browse to where you installed the Upgrade Advisor (standard c:\program files\microsoft windows 7 upgrade advisor beta)
then type:
Winsat disk -drive c -ran -write -count 10

It will run a random write test on your c: drive to measure performance; it will return on single value in Mb/s; more info you can find here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940226

On Dell Latitude E6400 with 160Gb Intel X25-M G2 SSD and HDD is encrypted!
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor>winsat.exe disk -drive c -r
an -write -count 10

> Run Time 00:00:00.00
> Running: Storage Assessment '-drive c -ran -write -count 10'
> Run Time 00:01:02.95
> Disk Random 16.0 Write 7.60 MB/s
> Total Run Time 00:01:07.85

expected score on a traditional laptop HDD, also gives you a nice indication of possible speed boost going to SSD

I thought X25's were limited to around 80MB/s writes... That looks like an average score?

Here's my results.

Yes. It starts to run, then crashes about 5 seconds into the test.

That is what I was figuring.

I'm not sure the tool is directly comparable to the WinSat program built into Windows 7 since MS changed the scale/tests around a few times during its development... but I ran the commands on the Windows\System32 WinSat program.

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7100]
Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\Windows\System32>Winsat disk -drive c -ran -write -count 10
Windows System Assessment Tool
> Running: Feature Enumeration ''
> Run Time 00:00:00.00
> Running: Storage Assessment '-drive c -ran -write -count 10'
> Run Time 00:00:59.20
> Disk Random 16.0 Write 4.21 MB/s
> Total Run Time 00:00:59.84

So his notebook HDD beats a 750GB 7200.10 drive? Disk system scores a 5.8 using their # scale.

if that 750gb HDD is fragmented, it might well be, yes

Not much better here:

Windows System Assessment Tool
> Running: Feature Enumeration ''
> Run Time 00:00:00.00
> Running: Storage Assessment '-drive c -ran -write -count 10'
> Run Time 00:00:48.45
> Disk Random 16.0 Write 4.10 MB/s
> Total Run Time 00:00:50.31

System: (standard settings, lest stated otherwise)
Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bits (U.S.)
Intel E8400
P5K-E Wifi
ASUS EN8800GTS 512TOP
Kingston HyperX PC8500@1066MHz
Antec True Power Quattro 850W

'C' is a 50GB partition of a Seagate S-ATA 250GB, fully defragged with Diskeeper 2009...

Well, I'm 48 after all... can't expect me to go that fast still

But meanwhile, my right eye is leering at Snoopy lying on his doghouse (that's my money-box), ready to wring every penny from his gut for an SSD

I'll keep you informed...
