Power connector on Radeon 9800

Hi again,

This maybe is a stupid question, but when I install a passive heatsink on my Radeon 9800 pro, do I still need to connect the extra molex on the card? I think the answer is yes, but asking it won't hurt anyone right? ;)

Thx!

Yep, the extra connector is to provide enough power to the GPU, as the AGP port by itself can't provide enough anymore :)

Ok, just installed the heatpipe ( ZM80c with fan ) on the card. Everything seems to be working. How will I notice when the card gets too hot? Will there be artifacts or crashes first? Or will my card just blow up from the minute I start a game? :D

Thx!

wear a helmet :p

nah, overheating gets you artefacts first most of the time.
BUT the ZM80C with fan cools better then the default cooler.

I know, but I'm a bit worried because the bottom of the cooler gets hot and top doesn't get very warm. So I think it's not installed properly.

Gonna try a game of Warcraft 3 right now. Let's all pray!

Edit : Fan @ max speed ( still quite loud ), bottom plate over the core is really hot during WC3, rest of the plate just warm, the piece on the core it self is almost too warm to touch and the pipe/top plate is not very warm ( same as case ). I guess it isn't installed right?
Anyone else who has heatpipe who can tell me whether top plate also gets warm?
I don't remember how it was with my previous card...
