Performance new computer.

I just upgraded my pc, here's what I have now.

P4 2800C HT
Thermalright SLK 900 + Papst 92mm
Asus p4p800 dlx Bios 1.08, Hyperpath enabled.
2 x 512 PC3200 DDR Twinmos
Gainward Geforce4 ti4400 128mb + Zalman heatpipe
2 x Maxtor Sata 80 Gig ( Raid 0, 16kb cluster )
Couple of case fans
Thermaltake Xaser III 480 Watt psu
Chieftec Maxi
Audigy 2
And some other stuff

Now I would expect that this system would perform quite well in games, but Vice City sometimes runs choppy in 1024*768 without Fsaa, and Midnight Club 2 simply isn't playable in 1152...

Is this normal?

3D mark 2001 score non OC : 13172 ( how is this? )

Then I tried Oc'ing quickly just for fun. System now running @ 3361 MHz ( 14*240 ) rockstable, which I think is quite nice :)

But 3d Mark score now only is : 13470

That's an increase of 300 points... So I guess my bottleneck is the videocard?

I just think it's weird that VC won't even run smooth on this system... Even @ 1024 w/o fsaa. I have all the latest drivers etc, system idle now 39° cpu, 38° case. ( Normal weather : 33° cpu, 32° case )

Thx for the advice!
Greetz, Tremor.

the VC is the bottleneck, no doubt about that

but try to tweak your system a little bit, on tweaktown are some good quides, they'll help a lot over here ;-)

Thought so... Damn.

I'll have a look at those tweaks. But is my 3D Mark score normal? And is the slight increase in score normal with a 500 MHz oc?

I still think it's strange my VC is "too slow"... They are still selling the Geforce Ti4200, which should be slower than my card... Is the difference with let's say a 9700pro that large?

Is it still possible to buy a 9500 somewhere and make it run like a 9700 pro?

Gamer 10th August 2003 14:19

did you do some tweaking in your bios ?

tremor911 10th August 2003 14:41

Tweaking as in?

I set the aperture size to 256, disabled all the onboard crap, set sata to be raid and bootable, enables hyperpath...

I set the rest to automatic... Except FSB, which is now at 240...
I can also set AGP/PCI speed etc, but I just left it automatic.

Do you have something particular in mind that I should tweak? :o

i can play GTA VC without any problems on a 2.2Ghz AMD
512MB ram and a geforce4 ti4200 at 1024*768@32Bit

trails turned off? cause that was a big problem in GTA3.
you could try overclocking you're videocard also...

tremor911 10th August 2003 15:17

Hmmm weird. Since the overclock VC is more smooth and Midnight Club 2 plays nice @ 1152...

How the hell is this possible? :grum:

Can't be possible that a 2800 is too slow and a 3400 is fast enough, can it?

The hell with it, I'll live with it.
Maybe new Vid card once I have more money

Not gonna try oc'ing the card, because I have Zalman Heatpipe installed, and I don't want it to go up in flames... ( although that would be a good excuse for a new one  )
