Default Need help with new system

At last I can start building on my new comp. (my mom and dad decided they want to sponsor me after my mom blew up my PSU)

I was thinking to combine a N2 with a 2800+ barton.

mobo: EPoX 8RDA+ <-- I heard this was a good one, any comments ?

and what about the ram ?

thx

What's your goal: to obtain the highest overclock, or just tweak it a bit?

The epox 8rda+ is a good board, but to obtail +200fsb most boards need a (simple) soldering job. I'd recommend the 8rga+ (integrated GF4 MX core) or the Abit NF7-S rev 1.2 (SATA) if you don't want to take the risk.

The bartons kick *** You might want to go for the cheaper 2500+ though.

RAM: either play safe and buy 2* Corsair XMS PC3200 256mb or go bargain hunting and find some Twinmoss PC3200 with winbond BH-5 chips.

If 166FSB is enough for you: go get you some cheap twinmoss PC2700 sticks. Mine "only" do 200mhz, but my friend bought exactly the same stick, and they do 225mhz

thx for the reply.

I'm gonna oc it a bit. (don't wanna blow it.) So I don't need the extra voltage from a 8rga+

as for the ram, I think I'll follow your advice.

But I still have a tiny question. If I put in 2*256 dual channel is that: 512megs or 256 megs ? :wtf:

you put in two stixx of 256 mb pc3200 corsair giving you 512
an epox 8rda+
a barton 2500+ (which you can overclock to 3000+ easily)
an slk 900 (or 800 if you can still find one) to cool the cpu

You barely need skills to get the abit NF7-S rev1.2 at 200mhz FSB 100% stable if you buy 2*256mb Corsair XMS PC3200.

The epox 8r(g/d)a+ is more for the die-hard overclocker.

as for the HSF, this is what I had in mind: AS3, SLK-800, duct (80 to 120mm), 150+cfm fan (I know, pure noise, but will it help, otherwise I'll just take a 80mm.

ans btw, will the Nforce2 unlock my cpu ?

thx

hmm

if you get the slk900 with a 92mm papst, you'll have fun.... you won't get 30 more mhz with what you propose but you'll get 30dB more noise :d
