Default MSN Messenger & Firefox

On one of my pc's I'm using Firefox as default webbrowser, but Windows Live Messenger does not want to use it whenever I want to check my mails, instead it opens IE7. This is in fact the main reason why I'm still using internet explorer, but as Firefox is just that tiny bit better and I would finally want to make the switch.
In order to make it work, you should install MSN Plus and a tool called 3.5.590, but I wondered if any of you had other options in mind. Maybe I'm just using the wrong instant messaging software?

you can use other Instant messenger clients, but they offer less features for the MSN network, especially file transfers and voice calls are problems

I've tried Miranda and Trillian in the past, but switched back to MSN plus

My own MSN Messenger opens links in Opera just fine? Both XP/Vista will let you configure a single browser as the system default under Set Program Defaults, or the namesake in Vista. Just make sure to manually set the browser defaults after installing MSN Live and it will use Opera or FF. Works fine under both OSs.

Personally I have tried them all, but Pidgin is the only one I'd even suggest. Trillian is fine, but file transfers via MSN kept crashing the entire program to often. I just use the regular MSN Live Messenger + Trillian at the moment.

Tried that, on both Vista/XP, not working.
