maxtor S-ATA 120GB makes a lot of noise ? Hi y'all, recently I bought this HD: * Maxtor diamondmax plus 9, 120GB S-ATA150 Everything seems fine while installing windows etc., but when I started copying some data, I heard a loud crackling noise. I know that when you copy a lot of stuff to a hd that it's normal for it to make noise, but this can't be normal, my "old" hd (WD 800JB =) ) made only a loud buzzing noise while copying stuff. Can anybody tell me if this is normal for these drives? |
personal HD setup: Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 9 80GB P-ATA 2Mb Western Digital WD1200JBN 120GB P-ATA 8Mb while the WD is fairly loud overall, but doesn't make more noise when reading/writing then idling, the Maxtor is quite silent ... but makes loads of noise when active so I guess it's normal (?) |
Teus seems to have the same drive as me and he sais his drive is a very noisy one too. Damn, guess I'll just have to learn to live with it :( |
when doing random read/writes the maxtor is indeed quite audible. But in idle or sequential read/writes it shouldn't be that much of a differance. |
Maxtor drives have always had a very loud seek noise, although I must say my maxtor 120gb sata is not too loud. If you crave silence, get a seagate sata drive, even there seeknoise is barely audible! |

So what drives are the best to place in raid if you look to the price, noise and performance. My wd80gig JB is at the edge for me if we talk about noise. |
seagate 7200.8 for SATA. (raptors for pure speed) for ATA: Seagate 7200.8 for noise reduction. Maxtor for cheap and large storage. Can't say much good about WD. Had plenty of them crap out, and 8mb buffer isn't that usefull for fileservers |
